Dear Alumni,
As we move into the late stages of summer, we at Little
Flower are looking forward to
another year of activity as a parish family.
Among the events to which we look forward is the annual Bull
and Oyster Roast for
alumni and parishioners. The Roast was well attended last
year and a great time was had by all.
As we did last
year, we are holding the Roast on "Little Flower Sunday",
the day when we
honor our patron, St. Theresa. The 11:00 Mass that day will
be our annual celebration of our
patron saint’s entrance into glory.
We hope that many of our parishioners and alumni will attend
the 11:00 Mass that day
before going to the Roast.
In accordance with that wish, I would like to extend an
additional invitation to our alumni
to attend Mass with us on other occasions. Many of our
classes have attended Mass when
celebrating significant reunion years and we have been most
pleased to welcome them.
At the same time, we would hope that some could attend even
more regularly, such as
on a monthly basis. There are some alumni who have actually
returned to active membership at
Little Flower and are attending Mass here regularly.
I realize that many of you have established roots in other
parishes, but it would be
appreciated if you could join us from time to time. I know
that our alumni are most grateful for the
blessings they received at Little Flower School, and your
attendance at the Shrine would certainly
express that appreciation.
Thank you for your continued interest in your Alma Mater,
and thanks for your wonderful
response to our Alumni Committee and its great work on
behalf of the Shrine.
Many blessings to you and your loved ones in the months to
come, and I look forward to
seeing you on October 7 as well as other future occasions.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael J. Orchik,
Pastor

Shrine News
Summer 2007
Back by popular demand
We’ve listened to your request. Back by popular demand is the
Bull/Oyster roast
sponsored by the Shrine of the Little Flower Alumni Association.
This year’s event will be held again at Martin’s East on Sunday,
Oct.7. For your
added enjoyment, we have added an hour (Noon to 5 p.m.) for this
year’s gala and
upgraded the menu to include oyster stew and fried oysters. The
"open bar" will remain.
For you Ravens fans, please be advised that Baltimore will be on the
west coast
facing the San Francisco 49ers. No conflict here.
Martin’s East has increased its charge to us by $5 per person. With
that in mind,
the committee voted to increase ticket prices to $40 per person.
Also, if you feel lucky, fill out the enclosed 50/50 raffle tickets
($2 each or three
for $5) and return them no later than September 30. The drawing will
be held at the
Bull/Oyster Roast.
Last year’s event was a sellout and we expect it will be again this
year. We
suggest you purchase your tickets ASAP so you won’t miss out. We’ve
been told that the
Classes of 1947 and 1952 will use the roast as their Reunion. Other
classes are invited to
do the same.
Thank
you, thank you, thank you
The words "thank you" were flying in all directions in the weeks
following the
Little Flowers Alumni Association’s first-ever Bull/Oyster Roast
last October.
First, it was Bob Campbell, the alumni chairman, thanking all those
who attended
the event; purchased raffle tickets; or made generous contributions.
Secondly, it was the
many members who took time to call or send e-mails expressing their
delight about the
success of the event. Finally, it was Rev. Mike Orchik displaying
humble gratitude while
accepting a check in the amount of $7,500.
The amount was reached by a combination of all the profits
($4,501.87) from the
event along with special donations ($1,610.00), money raised from
providing school
records ($470.00) and some of the money ($918.13) already in our
treasury from
membership dues. Our balance currently stands at $5,133.00.
|
A total of 449 tickets were sold giving
us an income of $15,715.00. Expenses
amounted to $13,513.13 included the charge from Martin’s East, the
orchestra and
miscellaneous items. Our profit on that portion of the event was
$2,201.62. The raffle
cleared $1,362.00. We collected $525.25 from the roulette and black
jack tables, another
$223.00 from the Big Six wheel, plus $144.00 from instant bingo and
$46.00 from the
photograph table.
Special Thanks
Once again, several alumni members stepped forward to make
additional
financial contributions. Charles Zeiler, Tom Neubauer, George &
Janice Eckhardt Kane
and Ellen Rehak were extremely generous to our cause.
New Committee Members
Joann DiBattistaAdkins
(Class of 1971) and Charles Zeiler (Class of 1964) have
been added to the Alumni Committee bringing the total membership to
ten. The
committee will once again be chaired by Bob Campbell (Class of
1953). Betty
Piotrkowski (Class of 1949) was reappointed as treasurer, while
Susan Hitzelberger
Scheerer (Class of 1963) will remain in charge of membership.
Membership Dues
This is a reminder that dues for 2007 are currently being accepted.
The $10 fee is
used mainly to cover mailing cost of the Shrine News and to
be used for deposits for scheduled events.
We currently have 294 members. If you forgot to "re-up" don’t delay.
We’d like
to surpass the 500 mark this year. A list of current members is
enclosed. If you feel your
name has been omitted, please contact Bob Campbell at 410-933-3666.
Annual
membership begins Jan.1 and runs through Dec. 31. Make your check
payable to Little
Flower Alumni and send it along with the attached form.
Church Doors
After several conversations with Father Mike about future goals for
money
raised by the Little Flower Alumni, it has been decided to target
the ten (10) doors of the
church. Fifty-five years of all type of weather have taken a toll on
these once beautiful
doors. |
We have received several estimates to refinish these ornate doors to
their
original beauty. The best price is $40,000, which will include their
removal, replacement
doors put up during the refinishing process and their re-hanging.
To meet the cost, we are launching a Pledge Program, which will
consist of the
following categories:
St. Theresa - $500 or more.
Monsignor
Larkin - $250 to $499.
Sisters of
St. Francis - $100 to $249.
Father Orchik
– Under $100.
Those pledging $500 or more will have their name placed on a plaque
which will
be placed on a wall in the vestibule of the church. All other donors
will be listed in a
souvenir booklet, which will be distributed to all alumni members.
Class of 1950
The Shrine of the Little Flower class of 1950 has scheduled a
reunion for
Sunday, September 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Christopher Daniel’s
Restaurant at 106
West Padonia Road in Timonium.
The restaurant offers an outstanding buffet which features all kinds
of cooked-
to-order breakfast foods, carved beef, carved pork tenderloin, raw
bar, antipasto, salads,
fresh fruit, assorted bagels, breads, muffins, Danish, cereals,
sodas, teas and coffee. Everything is included for the price of $30
per person.
Classmates planning to attend should send a check to Marty Horak at
57
Windemere Parkway, Phoenix, MD 21131.
Classmates having any questions concerning this event should contact
anyone on
the committee. They are as follows: Marty Horak at 410-592-2885,
Warren Bayne at
410-771-8281, June Danaher at 410836-7618, Iris Turner at
410-945-9165, Bob Geissler
at 410-987-1571 and Carolyn Fick Stetka at 410-665-2291.
Baseball Fan
Are you a baseball
fan? Are you married to a baseball fan? Do you know a
baseball fan? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, we
have info for you.
Frank Lynch (Class of 1953) has written a book about the Baltimore
Orioles
covering the last ten years (1944 to1953) the team played in the
International League. It
contains interviews with former Orioles Al Cihocki and Eddie
Robinson and the late
Chuck Thompson, who was the team’s play-by-play announcer from five
seasons. |
The book is currently on sale at Greeting & Readings in Hunt Valley;
at the
Barnes & Noble store in Bel Air and at both the Babe Ruth Museum and
Sports Legends
at Camden Yards. It is also available on line at amazon.com and
barnesandnoble.com and
publishamerica.com.
The book will soon be a permanent feature on the shelves of all
Harford County
Public Libraries.
Remember the Shrine
The Shrine of the Little Flower asks all alumni and parishioners to
kindly
remember the parish when writing their wills and doing their estate
planning. The legal
title is Shrine of the Little Flower Roman Catholic Congregation,
Incorporated.
A generous donation will help the parish provide for its future
while continuing
to serve the community both spiritually and physically. The church
thanks those who
have already included it in their wills.
Going, going, gone!
After 80 years of serving
the community of Belair Road, Seidel’s Bowling
Lanes closed its doors to the public on May 21. The decision was
made due to a severe
drop in attendance and a series of armed robberies.
Business peaked in the post-World War II years when the duckpin
house played
host to numerous leagues including many made up of parents of
children who attended
the Shrine of the Little Flower.
Its closing leaves only one duckpin house in Baltimore city.
Patterson Lanes,
near the intersection of Eastern Ave. and Chester Street on the
border between Fells Point
and Canton, still draws ample numbers of people to keep it operating
at a profit.
Seidel’s once catered to all ages including several youth leagues as
well as
several women’s leagues. It was a meeting place for neighborhood
youngsters for many
years.
It was the place of strikes, spares and first dates. It will be
missed by Little
Flower alumni as much Vilma Lanes, Vilma Theatre, Mayfield Music,
White Tower,
Blue Bowl Bakery and the Arundel Ice Cream Store.
Take a few moments to recall those happy days of your youth. |

Alumni News
The following is a letter to all
Little Flower Alumni class contact persons from Chairman
Bob Campbell:
Fellow Little Flower Supporters,
Thanks to all who participated in the 80th Parish
anniversary celebration by
attending Mass, the Bull/Oyster Roast or by contributing
financially. The day was a huge
success and enabled us to make a substantial contribution to Father
Mike Orchik. A full detailed financial report will be published in
the next Shrine Newsletter.
I would like to welcome Jackie Mahoney Watts (Class of 1947) and
Joann
DiBattista Adkins (Class of 1971) to our growing list of Class
Contact Persons. We now
have representatives from the following classes: 1947, 1949, 1950,
1951, 1952, 1953,
1954, 1955, 1963, 1964, 1971, 1976, 1977, 1981 and 2004. If any of
you know people
from other classes who would be interested in being a Contact
Person, let me know at
hsinn2@comcast.net or have them
call me at 410-933-3666.
Several people have suggested that we make the Bull/Oyster roast an
annual event.
Others have suggested a Casino Night. In order to make an equitable
decision, we need
feedback. Please initiate some phone calls to your classmates. Any
other suggestions as
to how to generate income for the parish will be welcomed.
We have put a tentative reserve for the first Sunday in October 2007
for the same
room at Martin’s East that we had this year, In order to assure the
date of October 7, we
must sign a contract and make a non-refundable deposit of $1,200.
within the next two
weeks. You can readily see how important the membership input is to
secure the date.
Another area in which you can be of tremendous assistance is by
encouraging your
classmates to join our growing organization. Annual dues, which runs
from September
through August is only $10.00. Dues are the BACKBONE of our expense
money to
cover all mailing and required deposits for events. If any of you
need a class list, let me
know.
Thanks for your continued support of Little Flower, one of the
greatest parishes in
the history of the Archdiocese of Baltimore.
Sincerely,
Bob Campbell, Class of 1953

Shrine
News
Summer 2006
Bull and Oyster Roast
Time is running
out to purchase tickets for this event scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 8,
2006 at
Martin’s East on Pulaski Highway from 1 until 5 p.m. For the
incredibly low price of $35 per
person you can join hundreds of Shrine of the Little Flower alumni
and parishioners who will
be celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of
our historic parish. No tickets will be
sold at the door. Deadline for ticket sales is Sept. 30.
Music for this
gala event will be provided by Railway Express.
Pastor Father Mike
Orchik has generously moved Little Flower Sunday from Oct. 1 to
coincide with our date in order to accommodate those wishing to
attend the 11 a.m. Mass
prior to attending the festivities at Martin’s East.
The 75th
anniversary party was a sellout and brisk ticket sales are
indicating that this year’s
event is fast approaching that goal. We ask that you don’t
delay. Buy your tickets NOW.
Tables for a party of 10 can be reserved upon your request.
Checks should be
made payable to the Little Flower Alumni and mailed to Shrine of the
Little
Flower, 2854 Brendan Avenue, Baltimore, Md. 21213 along with the
form at the bottom.
Questions should be directed to Susan Scheerer, 410-488-7169
Alumni Association
Membership in our
organization continues to grow. We are quickly closing in on
600. Our
goal is to assist Father Mike’s effort to maintain The Shrine of the
Little Flower as a viable
part of the Belair/Edison community.
To that end we
again extend an invitation to all graduates as well as former and
current
members to join our group for the low cost of $10. annually.
Yearly membership runs from
Sept. through Aug. 31.
Because of the
increase in mailing expense the Newsletter will be published just
twice a year
and sent ONLY to those on our membership rolls. The cost of mailing
our newsletter is well
over $1,000.00. If there are any individuals or businesses
willing to make a donation to help
offset the cost, your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
If you prefer to
receive the Newsletter via e-mail, please contact Susan Hitzelberger
Scheerer
at
littlefloweralum@comcast.net. Many thanks to those who have
joined our ranks. Your

Simply Beautiful
If you have never attended the 11
a.m. Mass on Sundays at Little Flower, you have missed a most
beautiful religious experience -- the adult choir. Nearly all
members, including director Michael Britt, live in other parishes
but return twice weekly to rehearse.
New School
Mother Mary Lange School which
opened last September replacing St. Dominic’s, St. Anthony’s and
the Shrine of the Little Flower currently has an enrollment of 292
students. Don’t forget the parishes that closed their schools must
contribute $15,000 annually to maintain the new school.
To Parishioners
This mailing of the newsletter is
being sent to all registered members of the parish to keep them
apprised of our plans. If you know anyone who wants to be added to
the mailing list please contact Susan Hitzelberger Scheerer or
Bob Campbell. |

SHRINE NEWS
FALL 2005
Inaugural Issue
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Shrine News, the first
of what we hope will be many
quarterly newsletters to be published for alumni and friends of
the Shrine of the Little
Flower parish.
From the first graduating class in 1933 to the final one this
past June, almost 10,000
students passed through the hallowed halls on Brendan Avenue.
And, although the school
has been closed by the Archdiocese, the church remains a viable
entity in the Belair-
Edison community.
To that end, the Shrine News is one way to stay in touch. You'll
read about what's
happening with your classmates, learn about upcoming Reunions
and other events and
discover all the positive stories about the parish.
Little Flower
Sunday
All graduates of the Shrine of the Little Flower and their
families are invited to attend the
11 a.m. Mass on Sunday, October 2 to honor the patron Saint of
the parish. Father Mike
Orchik, Little Flower pastor, will celebrate the Mass which
annually draws many former
Students. Following the Mass an informal gathering will be held
at the Red Brick Station
restaurant at the Avenue in White Marsh.
80th Anniversary
Next year will mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the
Shrine of the Little
Flower parish. Plans are currently being formulated to celebrate
the occasion with a
Bull/Oyster Roast next fall. It will be held on Sunday, Oct. 8,
2006 at Martin's East on
Pulaski Highway from 1 to 5 PM. The price and menu have yet to
be determined.
Alumni Association
In order to keep in touch with the many Little Flower graduates
living throughout
Maryland and in other states, a group of graduates from various
classes has formed an
alumni association with an office located in the parish rectory.
If you are interested in
joining the organization, which is open to all graduates,
parishioners and former
parishioners, we ask that you complete the enclosed application
and return it along with a
$10 donation to help defray the production and mailing costs of
our quarterly newsletter.
Checks should be made payable to the Little Flower Alumni and
mailed to: Shrine of the
Little Flower, 2800 Brendan Ave., Baltimore, MD 21213. |
The Alumni Association officers include Bob Campbell (Chairman),
Betty Piotrkowski
(Treasurer), Susan Scheerer (Secretary), Marie Kelly (At Large),
Dennis Meadowcroft
(At Large), Tim Pugh (At Large), Jim Durkin (At Large) and Frank
Lynch (At Large).
Please offer your suggestions and ideas to help us locate other
Little Flower alumni so we
can place them on our mailing list. You can do so by calling Bob
Campbell at 410-933-
3666. Tell him if you are interested in becoming a contact
person for your class.
New School
As most of you have already know, the Archdiocese decided
earlier this year to close
Little Flower, St. Dominic and St. Anthony schools and form a
cluster school. The new
school. Mother Mary Lange, opened this school year on the campus
of St. Anthony of
Padua in Gardenville. Each of the three parishes must contribute
$15,000 annually to the
new school. Our Alumni Association will assist Father Mike to
meet those expenses with
several fund raisers throughout the year.
Old School
Future use of the parish school and convent has yet to be
determined. Several charter
schools have expressed interest and a possibility exists that
they might be converted into
an assisted living facility. All transactions are being handled
by the Archdiocese.
