 Parish Chronology

1923: October 28th Archbishop Curley bought 389 acres of land from Mr. George Erdman who owned the land between Erdman Avenue and Herring Run Park.  The purchase consisted of one city block from Brendan Avenue to Kentucky Avenue and from Belair Road to Cardenas Avenue.
1925: May 17th St. Therese of Lisieux was canonized to sainthood.
1926: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Sodality of Our Blessed Lady, User's Corps and Altar Boys groups were established.
  Spring Archbishop Curley asked Fr. Thomas Jenkins Wheeler, who was ordained in 1913 by His Eminence, James Cardinal Gibbons, to be Pastor of a new parish to be established on the Belair Road site.  The name of the parish was to be named St. Brendan.  However, Fr. Wheeler appealed to the Archbishop to name the parish after St. Therese who was canonized the year before. 
  August 29th A contract was signed for the original church building.
  October 24th The first Mass was held in the church building at 6:30 A.M. by Fr. Kenzel, C.S.S.R.  There also were Masses held at 8:00A.M., 9:30 A.M., and 11:30A.M.  Attendance was 1075.  Holy Name Society was started in the parish.
1927:  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -  Sr. M. Raineldes was the first Superior of The Sisters of St. Francis who began serving the school.
  March 13th Ground was broken for the school and auditorium.
  September 15th School opened with an enrollment of 275 students.
  September 18th Mass was celebrated in the new auditorium which was used as the church.
  December 4th The school building was blessed and dedicated by Archbishop Curley, who also administered Confirmation.
1930: December A St. Vincent de Paul Society was established by Fr. Wheeler.
1931: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Charles Monmonier became Fr. Wheeler's assistant.
1933: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. M. Donna became Superior.
1936: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Boy Scout Troop 94 was formed by the Holy Name Society.
1939: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Little Flower Drum Corps was started by Fr. Monmonier.  Sr. M. Inviolata became Superior.
1942: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Wheeler Club was established by Fr. Larkin and the Boy's Choir, by Fr. Duke.
  April 9th Fr. Wheeler died.
June 12th Fr. Larkin, who was ordained in 1918 by Cardinal Gibbons, was appointed Pastor.  The newly ordained Fr. Fredrick Duke was assigned to the parish.
October Fr. Duke organized the Men's Choir.
1943: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Joseph Kennedy was assigned to the parish.
1944: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Plans were made for a new church and rectory.
Spring The Little Flower Players was organized by Fr. Duke
1945: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. M. Raineldes became Superior again.
October Construction was begun on the convent.
1946: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Little Flower Drum Corps was reorganized by Fr. Duke.  It had been disbanded during the war.  Girl Scout Troup 188 was established.
September 6th The Sisters of St. Francis moved into their new convent.
December Brownie Troup 351 was established.
1948: March 28th The publication, the Shrine, was started by the Little Flower Organization and Fr. Duke.
December 10th The Pilgrim Virgin Statue, which had been blessed at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, Portugal, was brought to the parish during it's world tour.
1949: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Frederick H. Dugan, who was newly ordained, was assigned to the parish.
  October 3rd Ground was broken by Fr. Larkin for the current church building and rectory.
1950: January 12th Construction began on the current church building and rectory.
  November 26th The cornerstone was laid by Fr. Larkin.
1951: Autumn The Shrine of the Little Flower was one of 800 parishes to participate in the Family Rosary Crusade.
  December 14th Fr. Larkin was appointed to the Archdiocesan Board of Consulters by Archbishop Keogh.
  December 25th The first Masses were celebrated the new church building.
1952: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The church's Casavant pipe organ was installed.
  January 20th Archbishop Francis P. Keough solemnly dedicated the new church building.
  May 7th Archbishop Keough administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to approximately 400 children in the parish and the Archbishop elevated Fr. Larkin to the rank of Domestic Prelate with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor.
1953: March The Booster Club was organized by the parents of the Drum Club boys.
1954: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Two groups were organized: the Sanctuary Society; and the Court Marian of the Catholic Daughters of America.
  January 30th The Holy Name Society inducted 252 members, which was a record.
  Autumn The Athletic Association was organized for the Little Flower youth by Fr. Dugan.
1955: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The first Athletic Awards Banquet was held.  Four girls of Girl Scouts Troop 591 were the first to achieve the Ad Deum Per Marian Medal
  December  Rev. F. Joseph Gossman became the first Little Flower graduate to be ordained to the priesthood.
1956: July 1st Fr. George Cora was the second Little Flower graduate to be ordained.
  October 18th  Archbishop Keough, and Frs. Gossman and Cora dedicated a new wing to the school.
1958: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Little Flower Council No. 1976 of the Knights of Columbus was formed.
1961: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. T. Howard Metzger, who was ordained in 1956, was assigned to the parish.
1964: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. M. Inviolata returned as Superior.
1967: May 29th Fr. Dugan was named administrator of the parish due to Msgr. Larkin's ill health.
1968: January The Parish Council was formed.
  December Msgr. Larkin celebrated his Golden Jubilee to the priesthood.  A Mass of Thanksgiving was offered, and a banquet in his honor was held for him.  He was named Pastor Emeritus.  That year he retired.
1969: March 1st Fr. Joseph Fuller replaced Msgr. Larkin who retired two months earlier.
May 9th Fr. Fuller died.
June 14th Fr. John V. Ballard, who was ordained in 1944,  was appointed Pastor.
September 29th A coordinator of religious education was hired. 
1970: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. Alma Regina became Superior of the convent and Sister Alma Francis became the school principal.
March 1st A new Religious Education Center for adults and children, which was constructed in the old school, was dedicated by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan.
October 18th Fr. Ballard became Monsignor when he was invested as a Domestic Prelate by Cardinal Shehan.
1971: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. David Leary and Fr. Joseph F. Breighner, who was newly ordained, were appointed Associate Pastors.
1972: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. M. Hiltrude became the school principal.
1973: February Fr. George J. Restrepo, S.J. was assigned to the parish.
February 15th Fr. Dugan died.
1974: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Walter McGovern was assigned Associate Pastor.
October 7th Fr. Leary died.
1976: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. M. Agnes Assisi became school principal.  Sr. Ruth became Superior and taught first grade.  The history of the Shrine of the Little Flower's first fifty years was told in a publication.
February 12th Fr. Larkin died and was buried in his family plot in Mount Savage, Maryland.
October 24th The 50th anniversary of the parish was recognized with a Mass celebrated by Cardinal Shehan,  followed by a dinner and dance.
1980: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mr. Michael T. Britt was appointed music director, replacing Frances Brown, who retired in the late 1970's.
1984: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sr. Francine became school principal.
1985: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Martin Demick became Associate Pastor.
1988: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Timothy Klunk became Associate Pastor.
1992: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Msgr. Ballard retired.  Barbara Talley was appointed Administrator of Religious Education.
February 15th Msgr. Ballard died.
  February 17th Fr. Duke died.
March 9th Fr. Michael J. Orchik, who was ordained in 1973,  was appointed Pastor.
1993: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mr. Lee Logue was appointed school principal.
1994: October 7th Fr. Leary died.
1995: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Richard Bozzelli was appointed Associate Pastor. 
1996: June 15th Mr. Henry Siarkowski was ordained as Permanent  Deacon.
1997:
 
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Fr. Orchik became the only full-time priest; although he has had able assistance from Fr. Thomas Bauernfeind and Fr. James Miles.  Mr. Richard Gatto was appointed school principal.  Joyce Hill began the liturgical dancers girl dance group, assisted by Nancy Marx.
1999: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A development office was created for the school.
2001: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Shrine of the Little Flower celebrates it's 75th anniversary.  The school building was refurbished and the computer lab was upgraded.
January 16th Fr. Kennedy died
  January 20th Fr. Kennedy was buried from the parish.
September 30th The Athletic Association held it's homecoming to celebrate the parish's 75th anniversary.
2003: January 1st Fr. Bauernfeind died.
March 24th The Shrine of the Little Flower establishes itself on the world-wide web.  It's web address is www.shrineofthelittleflower.org
2013: May 24th Deacon Henry Siarkowski died.
2014: October 24th Fr. James Miles died.
2021: July 1st Fr. Michael J. Orchik is no longer Pastor of the Shrine of The Little Flower, and he becomes the chaplain in residence at The Little Sisters of The Poor, Baltimore, MD.

Fr. John J. Lombardi (Fr. Jack Lombardi) becomes the Pastor of The Shrine of The Little Flower, Baltimore, MD.
